Sunlight Readable & Open Frame Touch Monitors

Outdoor kiosks, EV chargers, fuel dispensers and parking terminals need a screen that stays readable in direct sun, and many machine and kiosk builders want a touch monitor without a housing that they can build into their own enclosure. TouchVision makes both: sunlight readable displays and open frame touch monitors, built on the same platform as its industrial touch screen monitors and matched to its own embedded controller boards.

What makes a sunlight readable display

Readability outdoors depends on contrast, not only on brightness. Reflections from the cover glass and from the air gap behind it wash out the image, so a sunlight readable touch display combines several measures:

  • High-brightness LCD and backlight: the brightness level is chosen for the size, the site and the duty cycle. Ask for the options available for your size.
  • Optical bonding (on request): the touch glass is bonded directly to the LCD, which removes the internal air gap, reduces reflections, improves contrast and helps prevent condensation behind the glass.
  • Anti-glare and anti-reflective cover glass to cut reflections from sun and lighting.
  • Toughened cover glass: 3–5 mm vandal-resistant glass on infrared touch screens.
  • Thermal design: a brighter backlight produces more heat, so enclosure ventilation, sun exposure and operating temperature are reviewed with you during the project.

Open frame touch monitors for your own enclosure

An open frame touch monitor has no outer cabinet: the LCD, touch sensor and controller sit in a metal frame with mounting points, and you install it behind the opening of your kiosk, charger, vending machine or machine panel. That keeps the front design, sealing and branding in your hands and saves depth and cost. Mounting can be front-flange panel mount (embedded), rear bracket or VESA, and IP65 front options are available for the touch screen. TouchVision can match the outline and mounting holes of a display you already use.

Infrared or PCAP touch for outdoor use

Infrared touch works with gloves, rain and any opaque object and has no film layer to wear out, which makes it the usual choice for fully outdoor kiosks and dispensers. Projected-capacitive (PCAP) touch gives smartphone-style multi-touch on a flat glass front and suits semi-outdoor installations under a canopy. Both can be combined with high-brightness panels.

Frequently asked questions

What brightness makes a display sunlight readable?

There is no single standard. In the industry, displays of roughly 1,000 cd/m² and above, combined with anti-reflective glass or optical bonding, are usually described as sunlight readable. The right level depends on the location, sun exposure and enclosure, so TouchVision recommends a configuration for your site.

Do I need optical bonding?

Optical bonding is worth considering when the screen faces direct sun, when condensation is a risk or when you want the best contrast. For shaded or indoor sites, a high-brightness panel with anti-glare glass is often enough. TouchVision can quote both options.

What is the difference between an open frame and a panel mount touch monitor?

An open frame monitor has no outer housing and is fixed behind an opening in your enclosure. A panel mount (embedded) monitor has a front bezel or flange that sits on the panel surface and is clamped from behind, which makes front sealing easier.

Can TouchVision make an open frame touch monitor in a custom size?

Yes. As the manufacturer, TouchVision can build custom sizes, glass, brightness, bezels, cable exits and interfaces, and supports small-batch pilot orders before volume production.

Can you supply the controller board as well?

Yes. The display can be paired with a TouchVision ARM embedded board, such as the RK3568 or AM3354 boards, and delivered as a tested HMI module with the OS image installed.
